Default Why Pigeons Should Not Use Routines

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever heard about an experiment were they got diseased carrying pigeons to carry out a test on rituals? No? Well I'm going to tell you about it now.....(credit to derren brown,i realised this stuff after reading his book.)

In 1948 an experiment was done by a man called B F skinner and he put diseased ridden pigeons into glass boxes. He had a feeder attached to each box through which bread was dropped every fifteen seconds. The birds were observed and the scientists noticed the birds trying to work out how the food was released. Although the food was arriving independently of their actions, an early drop would be programmed to occur at the same time the bird made a particular gesture, such as bobbing its head or shouting "please may I have some food you scientist faggots". At this point the bird presumed that their actions had made the food drop so they kept carrying out this action/ritual even though it had no effect on the speed the food would fall!

Another experiment was done were they put a digital score board up and got adults to pull 3 levers, the adults were told that if they pulled the levers in a certain sequence they were more likely to get points, of course this wasn't true the points the adults were given were completely random. The adults swore that if they pulled the levers in a certain sequence they would get more points. Just shows you the sorta tricks your mind can play on you.

Now the point of this post isn't to tell you about pigeons or stupid adults its to tell you how this is effecting nearly everyones game who uses routines. Now if you go up to a girl and say to them "who lies more men or women" if you really observe your results after carrying out theses routines/rituals you will find that you don't actually have that much success infact you probably have very little success but because sometimes you are rewarded ( you get laid) you think that it would work consistently. The reason I'm writing this post is to encourage you guys to use a more natural approach instead of canned routines. If you have developed canned routines that works consistently for you then by all means use them. But if you analyze your results and it is only working for you sometimes then i suggest a different approach.

Thanks very much for reading my post and I hope this helps somebody.

You can read more about this in wikipedia.

However:

Quote:
In a 2004 paper titled "Superstition Re-revisited: An Examination of Niche-Related Mechanisms Underlying Schedule Produced Behavior in Pigeons," he demonstrated that what Skinner had seen as "superstitious" behaviour was accounted for by the natural foraging behaviours of the species he used as test subjects.[6]
The answer to this for the PUA is: always be critical, analyze your sarges, field test a lot, try different types of game-structure.
